The flexibility, fatigue, and wear resistance of a wire rope are impacted by the quantity of strands and wires it contains. Choosing a rope often involves finding a balance. Typically, a rope with more load-bearing wires tends to be more flexible, but if the wires are smaller, it may have less resistance to abrasion. For instance, a 7 x 19 wire, with the same nominal diameter as a 7 x 7 wire, would be more flexible, demonstrating that a higher number of smaller wires and strands can result in a flexible rope with good resistance to bending fatigue wear.

The construction of wire rope is defined by the number of outer strands (first number), and the number of wires within that strand (second number).
