Expert Maintenance Review
Knife guards operate in one of the highest-wear areas of a draper front. Guard points and ledger surfaces are exposed to soil, sand, crop residue and continuous contact with the reciprocating knife. As the ledger edges round off, guard slots wear or individual guards become damaged, crop can begin to tear rather than shear cleanly.
Common signs of cutter-bar guard wear include ragged cutting, increased crop pulling, uneven stubble, knife chatter and additional resistance through the knife drive. Mixed guard wear can also create inconsistent knife-to-ledger clearance across the full 40ft cutter bar.
During pre-season maintenance, inspect the complete guard line for broken or bent points, rounded ledger edges, excessive slot wear and inconsistent guard height. Knife sections, hold-down components, knife heads and drive components should also be checked because excessive clearance or wear elsewhere in the cutting system can affect the performance of a new guard set.
Installation Tip: Set the Complete Guard Line Before Final Tightening
Clean rust, crop residue, dirt and built-up material from the cutter-bar mounting surface before installing the new guards. Fit the guards loosely first and check alignment across the complete cutter bar before final tightening.
Pay particular attention to the knife-drive ends and centre overlap area, where incorrect guard positioning can create tight spots or inconsistent knife clearance. Once the guards are aligned, tighten all mounting hardware to the machine manufacturer's specified torque.
Before operating the header under power, move the knife through a complete stroke by hand and check that the sickle moves freely through every guard without binding.
