Supplied as a complete cutter-bar set, the kit includes left and right end guards, double heat-treated ledger guards, no-ledger guards and the centre overlap components required across the 45-foot cutting platform.

Knife guards are a major wear point in the cutter bar. Rounded ledger edges, damaged guard points and worn knife slots can reduce the quality of the shearing action and create inconsistent knife clearance across the front. A 45ft cutter bar places a large number of guards and knife sections into continuous work. Guard points and ledger surfaces are exposed to soil, sand, grit, crop residue and repeated contact with the reciprocating knife. As wear develops, ledger edges can become rounded and knife slots can open up, reducing the effectiveness of the crop shearing action.

Common signs of guard wear include ragged crop cutting, uneven stubble, crop pulling, knife chatter and additional resistance through the knife drive. On a double-drive front, it is particularly important to inspect both knife-drive areas as well as the centre overlap because wear or incorrect clearance in these areas can affect smooth knife movement.

During pre-season maintenance, inspect the complete 45ft guard line for damaged points, rounded ledger surfaces, worn knife slots and inconsistent guard height. Check knife sections, hold-down clips, knife heads, head bearings and knife-drive components at the same time. Worn components elsewhere in the cutter-bar system can reduce the benefit of fitting a complete new guard set.
